July 16, 2020: Hippo and Butterfly Layered Decal

Products Used

This project marks a first in two realms: starting commissions and the beginnings of a possible YouTube channel. EEEKKK!

After so much practice, I finally reached a level of comfort to start accepting commissions. It has all started with this little beauty, requested by a friend of my husband as a gift for his wife (such a sweet gesture). After DMing to hash out design details, I was able to construct this cutie.

Can I add that this design is officially the most delicate I’ve done to date? The total height for the entire design is six inches, so the small details in the flowers on the hippo’s head and the zentangle design in the butterfly wings were tough! The butterfly was reiterated and cut four times, reducing the contours each time. This was to make sure when the Cricut cut the design, it didn’t ruin the vinyl.

I was able to again successfully use the parchment paper technique to layer the design elements so well. (For more details on using parchment paper to layer, check out this blog post). Using parchment paper has quickly become my go-to method for any kind of layering. Once everything was assembled, I made sure that the design would stay on the transfer tape by doing a test peel on both top corners. Then an easy pull tab was added as I usually do before sending vinyl decals to others. If anyone has the same issues I do, peeling transfer tape away from backing can be a challenge, thus why I try to always add the easy pull tab.

The second major milestone accomplished with this project is the beginnings of a possible YouTube channel. As I started out on Instagram, I found myself wanting to incorporate more ‘story’ behind each project, which is why I started this blog. However, I now see more of a need to provide people with longer edits of process videos, as that has been a request multiple times on recent IG posts. Clicking the picture at the top will take you to the new YouTube video. Since the first one was a test to understand the posting process, there is no voice over or music. I do plan to incorporate music (and maybe some voice over or subtitles) in the future. We shall see!
