December 19, 2020: Merry & Bright

More Holiday Cheer

Keep things merry & bright this holiday season! Like just about crafter out there, I couldn’t resist the urge to make some custom ornaments for the tree to bring a little more personalization to it. My husband has way outnumbered me with his chatchky ornaments from various fandoms. I need to reclaim the lead! Hopefully this little merry & bright ornament will help with that.

Since we set up the tree, my husband has been moving a Waldo ornament around waiting to be found. Each time he’s spotted, my husband moves him again. Thanks to this merry & bright ornament, I found Waldo again!

Creating an Outline

This design was the first time I have successfully created an outline layer for a design using Adobe Illustrator. In the past, my husband has usually walked me through it since he’s more knowledgeable than I am with Illustrator. Now, I want to share the steps with you here. Please keep in mind that these steps are using my iMac computer and an Adobe Cloud subscription that includes Illustrator 2020.

First, select the file for you wish to create an outline and open it with Adobe Illustrator.

Once the file is loaded into Illustrator, highlight the design to select it all.

At the top, choose the ‘Object’ menu. In the menu, select ‘Path’ and then ‘Offset Path’. A popup box will appear.

Here, you can change the number in the offset box to your desired thickness. For this project, I used 10.

Make sure to save your file with the name you prefer and the format set to SVG for easy uploading later into Design Space.

Now you will be able to upload both the top and bottom designs as separate layers into Design Space. Oh! Once the designs are on the canvas of Design Space, be sure to select your bottom layer and weld it all together. Illustrator will leave pieces as individual sections, so welding will ensure the Cricut doesn’t cut that layer as a bunch of little pieces.
